During
visits to Haiti I was profoundly affected by voodoo
rites and symbolism that recalled my Siberian grandmother’s
stories of shamans, spirituality, and symbolic magic.
The works that I call "Shaman Coats" are really
a dual artistic product, where the act of stitching,
binding, braiding, painting, and piercing is as important
as the resulting artwork. As the “real”
shaman takes risks and uses shock, surprise, and dramatic
provocations to establish bonds with others, so I also
try to take risks with my art. I take advantage of accidents,
that is, chance interactions of materials that emerge
when “unwatched”. Although I sometimes feel
myself in an ecstatic altered state when creating, my
artwork is simply artwork, and is not intended to be
in any way magical . I made most of the “coats”
one-sided so they could not be worn. They are art objects
rather than costumes. Although the symbols I have used
on the coats are from many different shamanic traditions,
I choose not to explain them in detail; rather, prefer
to invite personal interpretation and involvement in
the viewer...

Hunt Coat
| The
three layers on the front of this garment represent the
three Worlds - Upper, Middle and Lower - that the shaman
moves through on his quest for a good hunt for the tribe.
All three Worlds are thanked for providing a successful
hunt. The robe is decorated with bone beads, fur, and shells
to pay homage to the slain animals of the hunt. |

Bridge Coat
The
rainbow is believed to be a bridge between the Worlds and,
as it is often fleeting, the shaman is wise in wearing his
own rainbow lest he be stranded in one of the Worlds he
visits. Horns represent power and two pairs are attached
on the robe: one pair visible and one pair hidden under
the fringe. Lightning arrows are protection against evil
spirits. |

shed their skin to become new again, and therefore are powerful
symbols of transformation, creation, and re-creation. The
red “stairs” go both up (from bodily illness to
health) and down (back to life from unconsciousness or coma)
and the shaman travels these mystical stairs to help heal
the sick. |
