FABRIC BANNERS

I use this medium for several reasons: first, the banner is historically an important part of celebrations, festivals and holy days. It is associated with joyfulness. Because the use of fabric has traditionally been “women’s work”, I wanted my banners to express the theme of powerful women as a
celebration of their complexity, mystery, and strength. My art is deeply influenced by Middle Eastern use of flattened forms as exhibited in mosaics and carpets, and I have attempted to reflect this in my banners. Yet, even though flat, the banners have motion and liveliness. The creation of vigorous, witty, and expressionistic icons in a flat medium was a challenge I wanted to master.

Banners are cotton applique on cotton/polyester base. They are embellished with embroidery, beads, sequins, and silk. All are lined and have custom-designed hanging poles.
